Atlanta-based United Parcel Service Inc. announced plans to spend $200 million to expand its facilities at the Cologne Bonn Airport in Germany.
The expansion, which would be completed in 2013, will be the company’s largest investment in a facility outside the U.S.
“This investment demonstrates our long-term confidence in, and commitment to, the European economy and its businesses that continue to produce goods sought after the world over,” said Jim Barber, president of UPS Europe.
The expansion would increase the facility’s sorting capacity from 110,000 to 190,000 packages per hour and would include a major extension to the existing building partially to handle larger freight shipments.
UPS is the largest employer at the airport with 2,300 employees. The company will create 200 new jobs there by the end of 2013.
