New Head for UPS Foundation

Eduardo Martinez has been named president of the UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of United Parcel Service Inc.

Mr. Martinez, a 52-year-old Cuba native, is being promoted from a program director position to replace Ken Sternad, who is retiring after 35 years with the company.

That’s about the same amount of time since Mr. Martinez started in a south Florida UPS location as a package handler.

Mr. Martinez has a variety of responsibilities, including chairing the World Economic Forum‘s Logistics Emergency Team, where he represents UPS.

The foundation has recently shifted its priorities to fit more closely with the company’s strengths. UPS has donated its time, money and expertise to many communities requiring logistical help after natural disasters.

The foundation recently celebrated its 60th anniversary. It gave $93 million and 1.6 volunteer hours to initiatives around the world in 2011.
