Although high fuel prices are causing cuts in trans-Atlantic capacity this year, Delta Air Lines Inc. is planning a new flight to Amsterdam on Oct. 27.
The flight will run four times per week throughout the winter, connecting Atlanta passengers to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, the hub for Delta’s Dutch joint-venture partner, KLM.
Delta already operates one daily nonstop flight from Atlanta to Amsterdam, as does KLM. The new frequency will provide more convenient connections for travelers heading to Europe and beyond, said Trebor Banstetter, a Delta spokesman.
Dealing with stubbornly high prices for jet fuel and flagging demand, Delta in February announced that it would suspend service to Copenhagen, Denmark; Athens, Greece; Prague, Moscow, Tel Aviv and Shanghai from Atlanta, Mr. Banstetter said.
“Fortunately we still operate nonstop service to nearly 70 international destinations from Atlanta, and we’re always looking for markets that we think will support new or expanded service, so we’re pretty happy to be adding some more flights to Amsterdam,” Mr. Banstetter told GlobalAtlanta in an email.
In a bid to better control costs in the long run, the airline announced in April it would buy an oil refinery outside Philadelphia for $150 million, a move some analysts have called risky.
